Blood Donors Live Healthy & Save Lives

Blood Drive at Royal United Mortgage LLC

Someone in the U.S. needs blood every 2 seconds.

One donation of a pint of blood saves about 3 lives!

We all know that giving blood saves lives – did you know that it could save your own life?

Giving blood provides health benefits to you, the donor.  Many studies have proven that giving blood a couple of times per year reduces chances of heart-attack, heart disease, and cancer. In addition, you also receive a free mini health screening that includes a blood pressure check, cholesterol check, iron check, etc.

If you have donated your time or money to any philanthropic events you understand how good it is to make a difference in someone’s life. Giving blood is no different.

So, why don’t folks give?
The #1 reason is, “I don’t like needles.”  Really?!

Let’s be honest – Who does?  I’ve got to believe that folks are tough enough to get through it.

So, let’s talk about it.
Here’s my brief explanation to help eliminate, or reduce hesitation:

There are 2 needle sticks; the first in the finger (to test for iron), and the second is the needle to draw the blood.

For the finger prick, you don’t actually see the needle.  It does not “hurt”, but is a slight quick sting (it’s more of a surprise than anything).

The needle to draw the blood is about the same diameter as a drain pipe under your sink!  (At least, it looks like it – especially if you don’t like needles.) That being said, it does hurt, but only when the needle is inserted – this lasts less than one second. Once inserted there is no pain, and barely a feeling at all (just slight pressure).  When the needle is removed (which is quicker than going in), you can barely feel it.

The donation process from needle in to needle out lasts 5-10 minutes total.

The entire process of donating blood from beginning to end is 30-45 minutes.

The next time the American Red Cross Blood Mobile visits, consider sacrificing minor discomfort in your life to make yourself healthier and save the life of another!
