A Day of Serving at Little City
RUM’s Schaumburg team had a group of 15 people head out to Little City. Little City is an organization based just down the road from our office that provides a safe environment for both children and adults with disabilities. They provide everything from a therapeutic day school for children with autism, to home-based support, a children and adult residential facility, and multiple health, wellness, and arts activities. They also provide job coaching and skill building to help adults with disabilities find and maintain successful employment.
We had the pleasure of spending the morning of Friday, April 13th with them, working with adults in their horticulture program! We helped get their edible garden cleaned up and ready for planting. We had about 8-10 residents join us in the garden and help with clearing weeds, and turning up the patches for planting. We had a blast getting to know some of them and enjoyed having them teach us how to do things the right way.
What was truly incredible was hearing what an impact we had on their horticulture program in just a few short hours. What we were able to accomplish in a little over 3 hours, would have taken the residents about 4 weeks to do. Our coordinator, Stephanie explained that we earned major brownie points with these guys because we did all the grunt work it takes to get the garden ready. I explained to Stephanie, that we get to help people every day accomplish their financial goals from behind a desk, but to see the appreciation on these faces and to know what our work will allow their horticulture program to do, is extremely heart-warming!
We have already put the works in place to get out there and do a little work, play a little softball with the residents and enjoy a little BBQ. This experience had our team both EXHAUSTED and EXCITED for the new friends we made and how much support we’ll be able to provide to their facility!
