People think that a low credit score eliminates any possibility of obtaining a loan; blemishes on their record – high card balances, missed payments, disputed charges and negative comments – will forever deny them access to all financial options.

That’s baloney.

Now don’t be misled, your credit score has to be a certain level to qualify for a mortgage loan – and the higher the better. But given time, all less than stellar scores can be improved by taking the right steps; the big challenge is finding someone who won’t charge you an arm and a leg to explain
what those steps are.

Here are a few things that have an impact on your score – some you know and some you don’t, some will make sense and some won’t:

• Credit cards – too high a balance or no balance; limits set too high or too low; overused or underused
• Late payment – can be removed under the right circumstances
• Disputes – you can take action that may remove unfair or errant charges; even those that wound up in collections
• Liens – many people discover phantom liens against their home that seriously degrade their score
• Negative comments – negative items older than seven years (10 in the case of bankruptcy) should automatically be removed…sometimes they are not

The point of all this is Don’t Give Up! Credit Bureaus are by definition a bureaucracy; and while very important to our industry, they can be unwieldy, unfair and unbending. They are a mystery to most folks and the door to all their secrets is locked tight.
