Royal United Mortgage LLC Volunteers at The Oaks Academy Field Day
When I walked into The Oaks Academy I was immediately taken back to the days when I was in middle school myself. The old building had a personality of its own and you could tell, walking through the hallways, that something different occurs here than at most other schools in the area.
The Oaks Academy is an independent school located in the heart of Indianapolis. Their mission is to provide a rigorous, classical, and fun-filled education program to children of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds in the Greater Indianapolis region. Started in a basement of a long forgotten building in downtown Indianapolis, surrounded by boarded up homes, The Oaks Academy started in the fall of 1998 with only 53 students and a dream to provide a deeper education for children in the area who would have otherwise not received it.
The result over the last eighteen years is the addition of two more buildings, a growing enrollment of 730 students, with children of all different backgrounds, and scoring #1 in the state on ISTEP last year. Providing this world-class education does not come however without a cost. While some families are able to pay their tuitions in full, 85% of families need financial aid for their children to attend The Oaks Academy.
Staff, at times, can be limited and Royal United noticed an opportunity to help put on an end of the year field day for the students. 16 employees came to The Oaks Academy’s Middle School to give the students a great day of outdoor fun. From corn hole, to a full sized KerPlunk game, tie-die, and ultimate frisbee, it was difficult to tell who was having more fun between the students and employees.
It was extremely rewarding to see the impact just a few hours could make spending time with these unique students at their incredible school. Part of why Royal United Mortgage LLC was founded was “with the mission to enrich lives in the community it serves”. Not only do I feel like that was accomplished at The Oaks Academy Field Day but we aided a school who holds the same mission for the Greater Indianapolis area. It was very inspiring to see what this school was able to accomplish with very little assets but a very big dream and I’m happy to be a part of the good they are continually achieving.
