Real Client Success Story: Tennessee Penny’s Pennies

When I first talked to Penny, she sounded like somebody who had been dealt a few bad hands and wasn’t expecting anyone to help her out. Like many responsible borrowers, a combination of painful financial curveballs had forced her to file for bankruptcy.

Unexpected medical costs popped up right as she was trying her best to put her kids through college and while she intended to pay every penny back, the debt burden had become overwhelming. She filed for Chapter 13 Bankruptcy and as the borrower paid back her debts according to an income-based plan.

Now, 1 year after paying everything back, Penny was stuck in a mortgage with an extremely high interest rate and she was afraid her bankruptcy and credit history would prevent her from refinancing. Penny had worked so hard for years to rebuild her credit and prove she was a responsible borrower. She had been told by other lenders that she did not qualify. In actuality, there were customized loan options available to help her. When I told her she could keep the same term, with the same payment, and get enough cash to pay off tens of thousands of dollars in student loans… she didn’t believe me for a week!

Thankfully, after repeatedly assuring her that all of her commitment to financial responsibility would be rewarded, she gleefully moved forward with the loan process. Working with Penny was often the highlight of my day because of her extremely sunny mood and gratitude. She ended every call by reminding me how grateful she was. That made it even more exciting when her home’s appraised value came in higher than expected because it allowed her to be approved for more cash back.

Borrower’s like Penny are a favorite part of my career. The reality is that no matter how responsible we try to be, life happens. And sometimes we get into financial situations where it seems like we are doomed. I am always willing to help people like Penny when I can and the fulfillment that comes with knowing I positively impacted somebody’s life, keeps me working hard every day.
